Inferno at US Embassy in Baghdad: Missiles and ‘Suicide Drones’ Rain Down on American Soil

Black smoke billowed over Baghdad’s heavily fortified Green Zone today as a coordinated dawn attack involving missiles and a “suicide drone” struck the heart of the United States Embassy compound, leaving the diplomatic mission’s helipad in flames and its air defense systems in ruins.

The assault, which sent embassy personnel scrambling for bunkers and triggered an immediate lockdown of the entire Green Zone, marks one of the most brazen direct hits on American diplomatic soil in decades. Footage captured thick plumes of smoke rising over the sprawling facility—one of the largest US diplomatic missions in the world—as Iraqi security forces sealed off all access roads.

According to Iraqi security officials, the attack unfolded in two devastating waves. A missile slammed directly into the embassy’s helicopter landing pad, the strike confirmed by multiple Iraqi officials and visible in footage showing the exact point of impact within the compound.

Simultaneously, a “suicide drone”—an unmanned aircraft designed to detonate on impact—targeted and destroyed the embassy’s C-RAM radar defense system, the electronic shield responsible for detecting and intercepting incoming projectiles. An Iraqi security source confirmed that the attack successfully damaged the air defence system, effectively blinding the diplomatic mission to further threats.

The coordinated nature of the assault suggests sophisticated planning and intelligence gathering by Iran-backed militias operating within Iraq.

The embassy strike came approximately one hour after US airstrikes hit a residential area in Baghdad’s Karrada neighborhood. Those strikes killed a senior leader and two members of Iraq’s paramilitary Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF), while wounding five civilians in neighboring houses.

An Iraqi Interior Ministry source indicated that the booby-trapped drone attack on the embassy followed this American operation in what appears to be a direct act of retaliation.

The Iraqi Joint Operations Command’s Security Media Cell issued a rare condemnation, describing the strikes within densely populated residential areas as a “dangerous and unprecedented escalation” that should be “internationally classified as a crime.”

Videos shared by local residents showed devastating visuals of smoke engulfing parts of the embassy compound. The images, circulated widely on social media, captured the moment of panic as security forces rushed to contain the situation.

The embassy complex, located in Baghdad’s most secure district, has long been a fortress against precisely this type of attack. Saturday’s successful penetration of its defenses represents what one analyst described as a “significant security breach and lapse in protocol.”

Iranian state media reported the attack with evident satisfaction, citing “Iraqi sources” to confirm that the mission specifically focused on destroying the electronic detection equipment at the US mission.

The United States Embassy in Baghdad has not issued an official statement regarding casualties or structural damage. However, the embassy had renewed its Level 4 security alert just Friday, warning that Iran and Iran-aligned militia groups “may continue to target” American citizens, interests, and infrastructure.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has ordered security forces to find the perpetrators of what he described as “the terrorist act” against the US embassy. In previous attacks on diplomatic missions, al-Sudani has emphasized that “targeting diplomatic missions and embassies operating in Iraq is an act that cannot be justified or accepted under any circumstances.”

The attack comes amid escalating threats against US personnel in Iraq. The Iraqi Islamic Resistance has recently announced a substantial bounty on US military and intelligence personnel, while also claiming responsibility for shooting down an American aircraft.

Saturday’s direct hit on the embassy helipad and air defense systems suggests that such threats are being operationalized with increasing precision and lethality. For the Americans hunkered down behind the blast walls of the Green Zone, the message is unmistakable: nowhere in Baghdad is safe.
